• A scene-by-scene analysis of the PlayStation event

During Sony's PlayStation event, Bungie officially announced Destiny for the PS4. While we knew some people from Bungie would be there, but not that they would show off some new in-game footage and art. Before you read, I suggest checking out my scene-by-scene analysis of the ViDoc if you haven't already. It'll give you some background for my analysis here especially since I skipped scenes that were already in the ViDoc.

The top bit of art is new. It looks like a Guardian is carefully moving through a city's ruins. There are some trees growing in the sidewalk, so the city's been abandoned for a long time. It's probably on Earth somewhere.

On the bottom left is another new piece of art that looks like the inspiration for this gameplay segment from the ViDoc. Our best guess for this so far is that it takes place on Venus.

On the bottom right we can see a city covered up by orange/red sand. We've already seen such a city before in the ViDoc. The architecture of these buildings looks kind of similar to the buildings in the MARS poster. Thanks to DestinyUpdates for noticing that the desktop background has the name "mars_desktop", so we know this is on Mars now.

On the left is art we've already seen from the IGN embargo breach. There's a Guardian with a sniper rifle watching some of The Fallen and a Cabal patrol by. In the middle is another image from the IGN video, and it shows some Vex crossing a bay of some yellow ocean. I'm pretty sure the Vex will be on Venus, but is that the only world they occupy? The right image is new, though, and we'll actually get to see it in-game later on in the analysis.

Shown behind the Bungie guys is a new location. There's a tower and a red surface cut with canyons. In the distance there are more towers of similar proportion. Red means mars right? Sure, let's go with that for now.

If anyone has the far left image available in better quality (visible near stage), let me know. The other new image, on the right, looks like the Last City's defensive wall. There's a big empty hole in it which could be a gate and the player's way into and out of the city. If that's the case, one could imagine some safer PvE zones outside the city wall to level up at before you venture off to other worlds. This is just speculation, so don't take my word for it. I just want to see which of my predictions turn out right.

Now we start looking at the prepared video, available in 1080p frames:

On the far left you'll recognize the Fallen poster from the retail leaks. Next up is the Vex banner hanging above the Bungie dev floor. The third is a Space Zombie (note the distinctive 3 green "eyes") from the IGN concept art video. The one on the far right is never fully shown in the video, but people are saying it's a Cabal poster. The hand does look like a Cabal hand.

Since the first poster was included for pre-orders, these might all be posters we can get through pre-ordering. We know there's at least one more for the Cabal (NEW). I wonder what the 3 symbols under Cabal mean...could they be different factions of Cabal? The Fallen poster doesn't have any such symbols, however.

There's a guy on the left playing around in a test level. The camera is following the character in 3rd person. Who knows, maybe it's just for testing, but it does make a cool viewpoint. A question for you guys: if Destiny has a 3rd person view, do you think it would affect fairness in competitive PvP?

Update: People at bnet are telling me that Bungie said there will be 3rd person in trading areas and The Tower, and that you can do emotes.

    Here's a closer view:

You can also see some huge character that's twice as tall as the player. Cabal?

Nothing new here, but it's pretty in 1080p. This is a night shot of a scene we saw in the ViDoc. Again, Destiny will have a day/night cycle and the dynamic lighting to support that. Neato!

So here's the in-game shot of the art seen earlier. It looks like Earth's moon. There's some Chinese written on the building. My friend gave a literal translation: sky-orb dawn light. There's another symbol on the side of the white panel that looks like the Greek letter pi, but it's actually another Chinese character (thanks to UT Jonesy for noticing that). Google translates '光' to 'light'.

The sniper rifle is seen with an orange & black camo pattern which is probably one of the customization options. Remember the Demonware leak?

I'm not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the colour of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game.

Hellmouth, on Earth's moon, was first identified in the IGN concept art video. In the ViDoc released later than day, we saw it in-game and noted that you'd be able to drive a vehicle around these parts judging by the vehicle tracks in the regolith. The moon is also called "the broken moon" for obvious reasons. Not so obvious is why the moon ended up this way.

The 3 green eyes are a giveaway of a Space Zombie. Unlike your traditional zombie, it seems like these guys can handle weapons. My hunch is that Space Zombies operate like a hive with different castes. I get definite collector (Mass Effect) vibes from them. Again, it's speculation but I think well-founded speculation. Remember the background of this image (the crack with light streaming through it) and you'll see why later.

As the camera sweeps through these hallways I get the impression this is one of our "dungeon" areas mentioned during the IGN concept art leak. We only know of one such dungeon called the Dust Palace on Mars. Everything in this dungeon is new to us except maybe the energy beam. The Jungle (Venus?) gameplay segment has a pair of similar beams, but that's not enough evidence to pin this room anywhere. However, we will be seeing this area again so remember it (in particular the hexagon tiled floor, which is more visible in the video, and the tall thin light fixtures on the wall).

And what the heck is this?! There seems to be little moths fluttering around it. Only time will tell...

Here's some Space Zombies in a cave. The guy in front can't seem to contain himself--he's almost animalistic. Meanwhile the 2 guys in the back march along in a more controlled way. Note how the guys in the back have armour, weapons, and the distinctive 3-eyed head gear. The guy in front doesn't even seem to have any eyes, looking very much like a xenomorph. I wanted to point out the differences between these guys because I think it supports my castes theory. Different castes have difference appearances and roles. I also want you to remember the platform to the right of the image.

Some Guardians are seen here rushing into a cave, guns blazing. The crack opening at the far end of the cave is the same as the one in the closeup of the Space Zombie. The platform from the previous image is visible, same with the hexagon tiled floor and distinctive light fixture on the wall. Thus the last 7 shots are of some Space Zombie stronghold. Note the motion blur in this last frame as the player turns.

Take a look at the players themselves. It's nice to see the customization options again. There's a weapon on each player's back, also seen here. If we do get 3 weapon slots, is the 3rd weapon hidden or are we just wrong about the slots?

Check out the video for the full effect of this one. These cloud shaders look great and can clearly handle the dynamic lighting.

We've seen this room before in the ViDoc. I think it takes place in the ruins of a human ship orbiting Saturn. There's a couple humans in the background walking out to the edge of the platform. As in my ViDoc analysis, there's a Fallen seen sneaking in on the left. He's actually pretty big compared to a Human, especially if he wasn't crouching somewhat. It's easier to spot his extra arms if you watch the video. They're both unarmed.

So why isn't the Fallen firing on the Humans? Is he trying to stay stealthy? Are they here to talk? His rifle is still raised so the humans are a threat.

Seen here is the Exclusion Zone on Mars, controlled by the Cabal. It's easy to miss a couple things in this scene. Take a look at the far left of the image and you'll see something spewing out flames while it rocks back and forth. If you look up in the sky there a bunch of floating...T-shaped things...arranged in linear groups.

This being the Cabal-occupied Exclusion Zone, here's our first in-game glimpse of a Cabal. Big guns with big blades on them seem to be a Cabal favourite, seen here and here. As this shot fades out, you can get a better view of his head and see how it has the circular mouth respirator seen in the concept art.

Here's a similar scene to one from the ViDoc. This one still doesn't help us figure out what the blue flare up in the mountain is all about. My current theory is that this takes place in the lush jungles of Venus. We know Venus has jungles from the Activision press release. Check out the similarity between the plant at the bottom of the image and the plant in this concept art. I think that this is probably Venus and the Vex are the (primary) enemy found here.

Now we're going back to the big cave with the Space Zombies. There's something big chained up and struggling at the bottom of the frame. At the top, there's some weird cocoon things. My initial thoughts are that the big creature is like the queen of the hive, and that Space Zombies are insect-like. There's also a bunch of what looks like silk or web stretched across the cavern walls in the distance. If you look carefully at the hanging tattered banners, you'll see an emblem:

Maybe it will help us find out who built the place later.

Only a face a mother could love. It's definitely a Space Zombie, but who bound it up here? Is this our queen of the hive? Some cocoons are visible in the background.

Anyone else reminded of Alien eggs? The web is all over everything. There's a barely visible structure coming out of the cavern wall on the left.

While this is nearly identical to the shot we already have from the ViDoc, I just noticed the circular shapes in the bottom left corner. The curved metal strips are a lot like the "portals" we saw in the ViDoc: here and here. The architecture of the background structure is very similar to that of the Vex stronghold in concept art. I'm not saying it's the same thing, but it's reassuring my idea that this is Vex territory even though we've never seen the Vex in-game.

At the end of the ViDoc we saw nearly the same angles over the city. There's nothing new to be found here, but I'll remind you of what we have observed already: the Last City is sprawling and has multiple rings defensive walls; the city looks "poorer" near the edge; robots patrol this tower with sniper rifles; the role of this tower so far seems to be a meeting place for players.

Welp, that's all. I will try to keep this thread updated if I figure out anything new.

Another great write-up Con, I definitely missed some of those things!
Regarding the 3rd person perspective seen in that one shot, I remember hearing somewhere that the safe zones like the tower were going to be in 3rd person, so you can see how your character looks when you upgrade it I guess, which I personally think is a cool idea. You still keep the fps aspect for all the fighting, whether it be versus npc's or other players, but get a nice 3rd pp when you walk around interacting peacefully with other characters.

Wow, I can't believe you caught the third person camera in that scene. The cloth simulation looks incredible, too.

That one scene with the alien tied up reminds me of the Arbitor scene during the Halo 2 intro cutscene. Also, the cave looks largely unfinished in that scene...like concept art mostly.

Great write up! Just thought I'd point out, on this paragraph:

On the bottom right we can see a city covered up by orange/red sand. We've already seen such a city before in the ViDoc. The architecture of these buildings looks kind of similar to the buildings in the MARS poster, but it's not the same art and so we can't yet say the sand-filled city is on Mars.

If you download that image from Bungie.net, the file is named: "mars_desktop.jpg" So I think it is definitely mars

Check out the dead trees on the right side of the image. It's like Mars was once lusher but dried up again.

I never noticed that, pretty cool

Also, is it ok if I use that GIF you made in a video I'm making? Also perhaps use some of the points you raise in the article?

I'll mention you somewhere in the video, like, go check out this great article on DestinyHub.net for more in depth look. Or something like that. Plus link you in the description.

Great write up Con, little bits of information like the tattered flag in the SpaceZombie 'dungeon' are things I would not have noticed. Thanks!
